He said, “Moe, I've never heard anything like it in my life. It was so moving and so emotional.” He says, “Moe, I need to have 300 tapes by Monday morning.” I said, “Okay, I'll tell you what to do.” I told him who to call, the guy to make them for him. We just paid him. Did it out of his own pocket. He has a studio.
So I say, “Look, why don't we get Ossie to help train her for the debate?” So I called up Ossie that night, I got him at home, and I said, “Ossie, you have a big nerve?” He says, “What's the matter?” I says, “Making our people cry! [laughs]” So I told him. I said, “Look, we've got this terrible problem.” He says, “Let me look at my schedule.” He says, “Look, I can devote four hours this day, and three hours that day.” He says, “Moe don't worry, we'll work on her.” They proceeded - - what happened, they took out of the campaign Georgiana Johnson, full-time, for three days close to the election, Dennis Rivera, Bob, and one other person. The upshot was that they're being worked on. They're pulling people out of the campaign! That's a real terrible thing. Thursday they're going to tape. Thursday morning is the press conference that Doris has. At one point Dennis calls me up, he says, “Moe, we can't go through with it. We can't do it. It's not going to work.” So I said, “It's going to work, don't worry. Don't worry, it's going to work.” They do the best, and they tell me, “Look, it's not going to be great but it'll be alright.”
That Turner press conference, AP, everybody starts going after her. The best one is Bob Sanders, because he's got all the stuff. She's calling him a liar, and she says, “What are you quoting from?” He holds his arm up, “I'm quoting from 1199 News, your column.” Other reporters come over and say, “We want copies of that. Do you have copies of it?” Utrice Leid gets up. “What paper you from? The City Sun? I won't even talk to you.” She's so angry. She's got all her hangers-on cheering and jeering and booing. She's got Jim Horton and all those people behind her.
I didn't know Jim Horton --
Oh! Jim Horton's still with her! Jim Horton, the woman who's the head of the state NAACP, and a whole batch of real characters. She's so angry she canceled out! Dennis calls me from Channel 7. He says, “Moe, Doris canceled out!” I say, “Okay, good. Tell Gil Noble that you can't go on.” He says, “He'll kill you.” I said, “Look, he'll kill us, but later on we'll make up with him. Tell him you can't go on, you're not going to go on to give an audience to this third candidate. Don't need it.” Gil Noble calls me. “What are you doing to me?” I said, “Listen, you wished it on yourself. I hate to do this to you Gil, but
