Incidentally, Adam Powell was out of Congress by the time you went, wasn't he?
He was out of Congress except that my very first vote cast when I was elected to the first session of Congress was a vote to seat him in 1969, and he was seated. But he never took an active role and then died shortly thereafter.
Did you have any dealings with Rangel, his successor?
Oh, yes. We have a very good working relationship. If I were a Jewish constituent of Rangel's, I would threaten the shit out of him because the Jews can win that seat. It's a black population majority, but the blacks don't vote. My recollection is that in one election -- I don't know if it was a primary or a general election -- 11,000 people voted. I mean that's ridiculous. Now, Rangel could be knocked off by a white person who ran who was supported by the Central Park West community. There are 20,000 Jews up there, all of whom vote if they want to. And the new white (not Jewish but maybe Jewish) community will be on
