me straight that it wouldn't go through that year, but I had an awful struggle with myself. I wanted to go: I was young and wanted fun like anybody else. I remember saying to myself, “You just better stick with this, you know.” There might be a chance at some moment to get it reported. I knew we had the votes. I knew we even had the votes in the committee to report it out. I had the Republican members, Josiah Newcomb and Mayhew Wainwright, as well as enough Democratic votes in the committee. We knew we could get it out if we could get it voted on in the committee.

He said we couldn't and, of course, it turned out that he was correct - we could not do it. But I stuck around all summer. It was a long session that didn't adjourn until July or August sometime. I was there every week for a couple of days a week doing my duty.

That was one time when I got on very good terms with Smith because I began to respect him. I knew that he had told me the truth and that he was giving me such help as he could. I also came back and instituted a campaign of education directed to the Huylers personally, through social influences. By social, I don't mean social work. I saw that some of them were invited to dinner in houses where perhaps they hadn't been invited before. Social
