broke out it spread through the elevator shaft to the floors above. The whole building was enhazarded by that.
There would have been a much greater loss of life except for the fact that it was Saturday afternoon and most of the other factories in that building were not working. It was in the spring of the year and this factory was working Saturday afternoon to get out orders for the spring trade.
I was in Washington Square at the time of the fire by pure chance. I was having tea with Mrs. Gordon Norrie, who lived on the north side of the square. She was Margaret Morgan by birth. She was a sister of Ruth Morgan. She was a well-known person and a friend of mine. In a casual way I would sometimes drop in for tea Saturday. It wasn't a big party. There were just three or four people there. Our attention was attracted by the noise of fire engines and shouting. We rushed to the door, as you do, to see what was going on. I remember that the butler said that there was a big fire on the other side of the square. We could already see flames coming out of the windows. It was a very quick fire and happened very quickly. Her house was then close to where Fifth Avenue comes in facing on the square - the house has been torn down recently. Miss Serena Rhinelander's house was the corner house. Mrs.
