tragedy of this and the fact that it was imperative to do something. Within the next week or two there was formed what was called the Committee on Safety.
The Consumers' League was the only social work agency up to that time which had any information whatever about the hazard of accident by fire in factories, Probably the next day, I think, we were giving out information to the press and we were recalling other factory fires where the loss of life had been much less. I remember saying, and being disputed by some of the public officials, that there were hundreds of other factories in the State of New York, and probably in the city, that were just as bad and where the same fire might occur again. That, I remember, made the head of the Buildings Department, who was Rudolph P. Miller, very angry, because he was in charge of inspecting all buildings and seeing that they conformed to a minimum of fire protection. Also it made the Fire Department very angry. I don't remember who the Fire Commissioner was. They were responsible for fire regulations and it made them mad.
Efforts were made to suppress me. Some people went to see Mr. Cutting to see if he wouldn't try to suppress me. He said, no, he wouldn't. I had a right to say it.
