loss in life unless you had sufficient exits, sufficiently distributed and sufficiently protected, that every person on the floor could be out in less than three minutes - completely out and in a zone of safety.
Therefore he always pointed out that the fire wall and the horizontal exit is the cheapest and most practical form of exit because you can move several hundred people in a minute through a door if there is safety on the other side of the door, and if they haven't got to go up and down stairs, around corners, down fire escapes with no protection and that sort of thing. There, of course, were a number of very interesting buildings in existence which you could go and see which had fire walls which had been required either by law or by their own architects. One of them was Marshall Field's store in Chicago. I remember making a special trip out there. I don't remember whether Porter went out with me or not, but I think he did. I think a couple of other people went out to see it. That store was built on that principle and to this day I never go into Marshall Field's store without praising the Lord. It really is the only perfectly safe department store I ever saw.
