mother was a very substantial person. Inez was a graduate of Vassar; she was very good looking, very beautiful and a very, very fine speaker - a magnificent speaker. She was as good as Anna Howard Shaw, except that she was more in the modern tradition. She didn't speak like William Lloyd Garrison. She used the modern type of oratory. She was my generation. She became very important right away because she was so magnificent and had so much time to give to it. The rest of us just kind of joined in.
I was a good deal concerned. I was sold on the argument that women, when they once got the vote, would take a great interest in the social projects to which I was already committed. I still think that it's probably true that they did bring into the political field as definite obligations some social improvement projects that never would have come along on the basis of their mere political expediency under the drive of an electorate that was composed wholly of men.
For instance, a great many of the women in the woman's suffrage movement like those people I've mentioned - like Mary Garrett Hay, Dr. Anna Howard Shaw and others of the older type - had also been very active in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Temperance had been their idea in social reform. Of course drinking too much has something to do
