that the soft answer turneth away wrath. It also turneth away the expert intelligent person's question. If you just handle them sweetly and humorously, the crowd is with you. I learned the advantage of a little funny story - very short, very pointed and very harmless, not derogatory to anybody - as a method of handling the single-taxer, or the socialist - we never heard of communists in those days - or any of these other people who would rise on the outskirts of the crowd and ask an embarrassing question. It's a trick that's stood by me many times. If the crowd laughs with you once, they're for you and not for the fellow who's bothering you. Every now and then you'd find a sincere friend in the crowd. Some simple man you'd never heard of would come forward, worm his way up, get next to your box, stand in front of you and say, “I'm for you lady.” Then he would sometimes shout out, “These girls are all right. Give them the vote,” and a few things of that sort. Then you'd have another crowd who'd say, “Oh, they don't know anything. Women ought to go home and shut up. Woman's place is in the home. Where are your children? What are you doing?” Still those were not too difficult.
