the letters because eventually the military didn't permit anything except what was written by American people on the grounds that there were secret code words that had not been discovered. We had to corral a group of people - men and women - who spoke and wrote German well and who would put themselves in a position of being the amanuensis for men, women and children resident in New York who wanted to write to their relatives. It was quite a job to find them. They had to have a kind of clearance themselves. There proved to be a good many who were willing to do that kind of work and did it very well.
Then there was the bandage rolling, the entertaining of soldiers, the giving of camp shows in the various camps, the general social work. Everybody tried to raise the level of everything. It went on. It was growing organization and it was growing to be very good. We were getting the idea of utilizing volunteers who might be attached to any organization they happened to feel like. If it was some funny little ladies' auxiliary of a particular church and they wanted to help, all right we used them. We'd say, “How many women can you give is for this, that or the other project” We got very good people.
I don't mean to say that they attempted to do anything very startling, but before we got through we realized that
