Packy Downey went forward holding his credentials in his hand. He knocked on the door. “Would you believe it,” he said, “that wild man he come out and never looked for a minute at me credentials. He just hauled off and he started to hit me. But I knew his habits so I ducked. He didn't hit me at all, at all. But he hit the fellow from Rome. He didn't have sense enough to duck. Johnny, he was halfway down the stairs.” It wasn't the first time that Johnny Flynn had met an irate employer.

Packy went on, “He slammed the door in our face, and oh, the language that he threw at me. Oh, the language that he used!”

That was that. They couldn't get in to see him. He said, “I hung around. I told the others to go home. When Mr. Spargo come out that night to go home, I stood right by the door and said a few words to him. I said, ‘Mr. Spargo, I'm an officer of the State of New York and I've come in peace. I've come to help you.'

“He said, “What help could you give me?' and so forth.

“I said, ‘Well, I could give you some help. These men are very wild and might do anything to you. I've come in peace.'”
