conductor waiting for me. They didn't know who I was. I was just a lady traveling to Rome as far as they were concerned. They came to tell me not to get off at Rome; that it would be very unwise for me to get off the train at Rome; that I musn't do it. There'd been riots there. There was trouble. I said, “But I have business in Rome.”

They said, “There's no way you can get into Rome, except going across that bridge. They shot a man at the bridge yesterday. They're shooting again. They've got guns. Our information is not to let passengers off at Rome, but we'll take you on to Oriskany Falls. We'll stop the train there, though it isn't always stopped there. We'll take you on to Oriskany. You can get off at Oriskany and then you can hire an automobile if you've got to go to Rome and go in the back way. There's a mob and a strike there.”

Just then Packy Downey comes along. He got on a car way at the end of the train. I hailed him and said, “I have to go with Mr. Downey.” I told them who I was. “We've got business there.”

They held the train a good five minutes while they argued with me about how I shouldn't get off the train and go into Rome. I said to Packy, “What do you think, Packy? We don't want to create an incident by being killed here. We've
