town, except a few advance units to spy out the land. There hadn't been any trouble. Johnny and Packy were circulating and telling everybody that I was talking with the Governor and was going to get him to withdraw the police. They had promised by all that was holy that I would get the Governor to call the state police off. They were making promises which I didn't know about until later. But I knew I had to succeed.

Anyhow the Governor gave the order. Harvey Ferris thought he was crazy to give the order, because “that girl” told him to. Anyhow he gave the order to take the state police out.

I set out to do what I could. This was in the midst of summer when the days were very long, it was very hot and everybody was out in the square. All the working people of the town - women, children, men - with nothing to do were sitting in the square. They were sitting all over the steps of the courthouse. They were sitting on the grass. They were everywhere. The state police had been ordered to leave and they heard their rumblings of departure. They heard their horses clap, clap, clap out of town. They knew they were going.

Then I went to see the judge, because I wanted to ask him, before he left the courthouse, for the privilege of using the courthouse for hearings. I wanted to go in
