I think he had not sent it through the mails, but that it had been delivered to them by some messenger - some absolutely neutral person who didn't know what he was carrying. He just had brought a letter. In that letter he had told them what he thought of them. I remember that Johnny said to me, “To tell you the truth, I've seen the letter. If that letter had gone through the mail, we could put Spargo in prison for obscenity through the mail. That's done. But he didn't send it through the mail. He knew enough for that, or else he forgot about it. It's a terrible thing. It's a dreadful thing for a grown man, an American, to write that. Perfectly dreadful.”

The men had received it and that was part of their anger at Spargo, part of their hatred. In a meeting the next morning Harvey Ferris said he couldn't produce Spargo and the other employers said they didn't care to have Spargo brought in. I said, “We can't settle this strike unless everybody is agreed on the wages. You all hire the same people and all pay them the same wages. You have some kind of an agreement as to what wages are. Spargo pays the same wages that you pay in the kettleshop.” They were very
