there with muffled drums. There was the mayor. There was the Knights of Columbus. There was the miner's union. There was everything all lined up. There was a place for you in the procession and you just got off and got into the procession. All the authorities and dignitaries of Scranton met us. The local regiment of reserve soldiers - Battery B or some thing - was there. They all had the mourning band on their arms. The local chapter of the Knights of Columbus was in full regalia. The mayor, the city councilmen, and a group of really extraordinarily wonderful looking men - the United Mine Workers, Scranton Chapter - were there. The miners were mostly slightly older. They were really magnificent looking. They looked like the real thing - they could do a day's work and be proud of it.

A procession was formed. The coffin was taken off the freight car and was put on an open catafalque - not a covered hearse. Horses were attached to it. We proceeded from the railroad station to the church - a very large church. It might have been the Roman Catholic Cathedral of that town. I don't know, but it was a very large church and not awfully far away. It was up a hill. We walked in the order of our mourning and it was a very long procession - the family, the members of the commission, the members of the United Mine Workers, the various orders, a huge group of people who
