the night in the church and that the Requiem Mass would be the next morning.

It was really a great experience to see that total turning out. What was even more impressive was the night. As soon as the vespers of the dead were over, we, who had been seated, went around the coffin and out. Then the people began to pour in - everybody who had been in the streets. Thousands and thousands came in. There was a steady stream pouring in and pouring in. Trains began to come in from other places. People came in in little old automobiles, little Fords, busses from all around. Thousands of people poured into that town that night from nowhere. Nobody knew where they came from. They came to pay their respects to John Mitchell. They joined the procession and they went into the church, went around the coffin and paid their last respects to John Mitchell. All night long this went on. It was like the King of England's lying in state. They didn't close the church all night because there were so many. All night long a perfectly solid stream poured in and out and around that church.

The hotel that night was perfectly amazing. There was only one hotel of any size in Scranton. It seemed as though every miner in the United States was there. The miners had come from all over the country. They'd come from Iowa.
