Brooklyn family from way back. He was a very, very fine man - a very superior type of individual with a philosophical outlook on life, a very good education. He had the education of the old school. He had the manners of the old school. There wasn't a trace of greed in him. He didn't have that typical manufacturer's - or at least what the cartoon would want you to believe of them, though experience hasn't shown me that this is true - idea of making money for himself and pressing down the faces of the poor. That was not Mr. John Higgins. That was not his line. He was a nice, gentlemanly fellow, who made his living making starch in a kind of a remote place. He would have liked to have life go on as it was in the 19th Century. Everything was all right. The people who were rich were pleasantly rich, but not ostentatious. They never threw their weight around. That was the kind of a man he was.
He was very, very witty. I was prepared to have him not like me at all. I was prepared not to like him. I had never known him. I had to walk in there and think, “This old stiff from Oswego is not going to like me. It's going to be terrible.” I remember asking someone I knew in the Department what kind of a person he was.
