Smith. Smith would make propositions to him and be perfectly sure that Shientag would argue against him and point out all the weaknesses or all the possible answers, which was a great relief to him and a great comfort to him, because too many people say “Yes, yes” to a candidate all the time.

Shientag, then, had become close to Smith. I continued to be on very good terms with Shientag. When Mrs. Moskowitz in 1918, after the election, began talking to me about the reconstruction project she had in mind that she was gradually developing, I at once thought of Shientag.
