I never introduced any of them except when they were on a mission of good work - that is, when they wanted his interest or support in some proposal for the welfare of the people.

The Maternity Center Association grew up later, but I remember plainly that two or three of the good women who were forming that wanted to be introduced to the Governor and talk it over with him in advance. They wanted, of course, to have him sell it or recommend it to the Health Department. I took up Cynthia (Mrs. Arthur) Burden. She was born Cynthia Roche and married Arthur Burden. He was an invalid for years and years and finally died. He got hit in a polo game, had a concussion of the brain, never came to and lived for years. She was a very fine woman, but strictly social in her previous experience. She was awfully bright and intelligent. She's now Mrs. Guy Cary. She was interested in the Maternity Center Association. I took her and Mrs. Meredith Hare and Mrs. John C. Breckinridge (Isabella Breckinridge) and one other to see the Governor. They wanted to see the Governor about the Maternity Center Association and I took them up.

I've never forgotten it. They were a little afraid to see the Governor, but they wanted to. They were simply charmed - charmed beyond words. I think they became Democrats immediately. Anyhow, they were for Al Smith on the basis of three-quarters of an hour's conversation. In the first place
