state, particularly in the social life of Albany, which had always been very correct, very conservative, very top-drawer, not given to being too much taken up with governors. They had their place. Society in Albany has always more or less followed the lines of Washington society and protocol much more than any other state capital. I never saw any other state capital where there was as much dependence upon protocol, precedence, formalities and all that kind of thing. There was very handsome dressing on occasions. The Governor's dinners are things to be treated with respect, not only in dressing; invitations are fished for.
Smith became very popular in Albany society and in the best, old-fashioned, Dutch family society upstate generally. People liked him and liked to come to the Executive Mansion. They enjoyed his society, basked in his smile, and so forth. The social life was quite jolly and not at all confined to the Tammany supporters, although they were never excluded. It included all kinds of people.
John Warner was appointed by the Governor to be the Chief of the State Police. I'm inclined to think, though my memory is vague, that Warner had been appointed by the previous Governor, Whitman, and that Smith had held him over. He was a Republican and very good. He had become very competent as the head of the State Police. The police were
