it was his idea to give her a great wedding, doing the best he could.

Of course, this is another example of the rise of the Irish people in the USA. He'd seen other Irish people who grew up in the same area of Brooklyn and Oliver Street who had got rich in one way or another and gave their girls a bang-up sendoff. He was as good as the Ryans were any day. He was as good as the O'Briens. He was as good as the Philbins. He was just as good as they were. “They gave their girls a great wedding. I'm the Governor of the State of New York. There's nothing better.” I'm sure that was it. I don't think Al was ever a social climber, except with that strange ambition that every man has to rise in the world and to be as good as anybody.

They gave a bang-up wedding. Everybody was invited. Somebody came up from the State Department to help out with protocol. Al had proper military aides from the National Guard. He always had a batch of military aides. Of course there was the State Police, whose Chief was being married. The State Police can throw quite a show if they try. The whole State National Guard was at your disposal. In addition to all this the Washington State Department sent somebody up to help with the protocol. Not only every public official in the State of New York came, but all the military officials of the State of New York came. The consular officials of the
