that they were delegates to a Democratic convention because they were patriotic. They had the most terrifically devoted, patriotic service idea in their minds. We all came to respect them. I must say that we all tried to convert them to being supporters of Smith. I don't yet know how the women in my house voted. I never pressed them to find out. They became deeply impressed with him and deeply impressed with the kind of a man he must be from what people in New York that they had come to know said about him. The more they saw of the people, the more they respected them and so they thought he must be quite a person. Certainly there was a great build-up at that time of affection and friendship for Smith; whether they voted for him in the nominations or not, I don't know.

They were, of course, greatly impressed by Franklin Roosevelt and by his nomination of Smith. That was one of the things that just tore the place to pieces because of its dramatic character and because it was such a good speech. They had all seen Smith at this time because he was Governor of the state. As Governor of the state he was on the platform and welcomed the delegates.

I think John W. Davis was a candidate right from the beginning. I think his name was put in nomination on one of the first days. But there hadn't been so much feeling
