He made a good campaign. We all campaigned very hard. We campaigned for Davis, theoretically, but I seem to think that we did most of it in the State of New York and joined it with the campaign for Smith. Certainly the woman's committee had a wonderful caravan. They went all over the state in this caravan. It was just two automobiles, but they had signs out and they went in and out of the villages, up into the back country, making speeches, making a hand to hand, house to house kind of a canvass, and did a very strong campaigning job.

The Smith campaign followed the usual pattern. He went to the usual places. He went to the state fairs. He was Governor and he had to go to them, but that's an excellent way of progress. By this time he was developing his great program about the state hospitals and things like that.

By this time the governorship and the mayoralty were extended from two year terms to four years. It was because everybody got the idea that it was unfortunate in a great state like New York to have a gubernatorial campaign in the same year as a Presidential campaign, since the Presidential campaign tended to obscure the importance of the gubernatorial campaign and that for the state Legislature. New York State has never paid much attention to the federal government compared to what it pays to itself. New York State
