came down. On the end of that stem was a large ring. You held this and it had the effect of holding the cigarette quite a distance from the nose and also quite up. The elbow bent could hold the cigarette. It was very stylish looking. She did it with great simplicity, but with great elegance. She smoked her cigarette that way. I don't mean to say that she was a chain smoker, but occasionally in the course of a morning she would smoke her cigarette in this very elegant way.

She also knit. She had a way of knitting through meetings. She used to say that she did it because they bored her so - conference meetings, around the table meetings, public meetings and semi-public meetings - that she couldn't keep herself from jumping up and making a fuss if she didn't have something of occupy her hands. By keeping her hands occupied with a bit of knitting, she was able to keep from talking too much. It buttoned her down and she didn't talk too much. She was aware of the fact that she might protest too much and lose her influence. She had very great influence. The fact that Martha Draper didn't approve of something was a very important matter. It had to be noted.

She was a very good person. She was a very superior
