far as anybody knows, although he was a contractor and had lots of work from the city, he had been a good contractor. He had done his job and done it well. I think I was told that there never was any scandal about his contracts; that he wasn't looking for any handout. One doesn't know whether he gave a little tip on the side. That you can't know, but anyhow he had the reputation of being an honest contractor.
So that Mayor Walker had a good deal back of him. He had a good education. As I understood it from Mrs. Moskowitz, the leaders met. I guess in the Biltmore, because that's where the Governor always met, two or three nights, agonizing themselves over who should be the candidate. They would come back to Jimmy over and over again, because he was the brightest and on the whole the best available person.
The great defect in Jimmy was that he wasn't living with his wife and was running around. That wouldn't do for a mayor. Al and his outfit were very strict morally. It wouldn't do for a mayor. It wasn't right anyhow what Jimmy had done. He hadn't treated Janet right. It was very serious. So they would throw out Jimmy on account of his loose life and also because he didn't seem very responsible. They were all part of the same picture, the same quality of character.
