“That doesn't make any difference, Jimmy. You do your duty.” Al with the cigar in the corner of his mouth was saying, “You can do the duty. You got to promise Janet that there'll be no more running around. You got to promise me there's no more running around. That don't do for the mayor of the city of New York. Everything has got to be right. Janet's a good girl. She'll treat you right. She was good enough for you when you were young. She was too good for you.”

Then he said, “All right. We'll have the photographers there. Your pictures will be in every paper in the city on Monday morning. In a day or two we'll release the news that Tammany has decided to run Jimmy Walker. There won't be any more talk about this running around. You get it straightened out and get it straightened out quick. Make your peace with anybody else who's got to be patched up. Jimmy, if it costs you money, you'd better get ready to pay the money now.” He was very realistic.

It was one of the most amusing and bewildering peeks into what goes on in political life. At that time I'd never heard the phrase “the mothball wife.” I'm sure I didn't hear that until much, much later. Janet was the first
