honesty to prohibit its use entirely. We contented ourselves with a code regarding ventilation in the spray painting and in all other places where they used benzol. For anything smaller than an automobile it was not difficult to draft a rule for ventilation which would make a requirement that the fumes must be drawn off at a very high rate of circulation of air - a rate high enough so that actually the fumes were taken off before they reached the worker's nose or mouth. But with an object so large as an automobile, the building of a hood of sufficient size and the setting up of a draft of sufficient strength and velocity to pull off those fumes was likely to pull the workman out of the hood too.

Among other diseases was poisoning from carbon monoxide generated in the manufacture of rayon threads at the point where the chemical substance comes out of the spinnerettes, as they call them, and is made into a thread. This was a real mystery. We ran across it in the City of Buffalo where there was a DuPont plant making rayon. We had no name for the disease, we didn't know what it was, but people kept coming in to the Labor Department office claiming that they were made awfully sick, just terribly sick, in their place of employment, which was this DuPont works where they made rayon. They got very sick. They got headaches. They got sick at the stomach. They had long periods of indigestion.
