She was a social worker. They were not for the most part, however, moved by any broad humanitarian impulses, nor do I think that if you talk with most of the old timers today they would ever claim that they were. Many of them think that it's something that Franklin Roosevelt sold them. As a matter of fact, William Green went along with unemployment compensation to please the President. He finally brought himself to say he'd sign the social security report because “Roosevelt's been so good. I do want to do it to please the President.” They didn't really think there was much to it.

They felt that you should do this by unions. A union should bring you all the benefits. This is classical trade unionism on the other side of the ocean too. Your union should bring you all the benefits. This was Samuel Gompers' doctrine, too. Don't call it Gomperism, because it's really trade unionism. It's the typical trade union position and he was an English trade unionist. He had a European attitude. They all had it. You should belong to a union. That's your first loyalty. The union will get you everything you need. Look to the union for everything. Don't look to the government. Look to the union. They opposed law because it would divert the loyalty of their
