never seen any in the USA, until after they got educated or needled by some government official who brought them along. Then you would get a few of them to become interested. That isn't their basic life, after all.

Jumping way ahead to the International Labor Organization conference in Geneva in 1952, I'd like to say something about the labor men we dragged over there. There they sat, except for one man, who was kind of a permanent and had been well coached by Philip M. Kaiser, and others, and who was really interested because he's the permanent labor representative on the government delegation. They had about fifteen labor men there, who had been chosen. They got a good ride to Europe. Some of them took their wives along, and so forth. We could hardly get them into the committees that they were assigned to sit on, literally. These were committees recommending labor legislation throughout the world.

That merely bears out what I learned for the first time in the years that I was interested in promoting labor legislation in the State of New York. I learned they were not interested, they didn't think that was what the unions were about, and they weren't going to scatter their energies and their fire.
