faithful son of the church could be nominated for President. Then, he had a personal devotion to Al Smith. He became very devoted to him personally, which was natural because almost everybody who worked closely with Smith did become devoted to him personally. He had those qualities which kept his friends very loyal and very true in a personal way. I think that's about all.
I think that Raskob's political philosophy never jelled. He didn't have one. He had money and he was irritated by the same thing that irritated the Liberty Leaguers. They felt that Roosevelt was a traitor to his class. Although that wasn't the class into which Raskob was born, it was the one with which he was associating himself in his own mind. He was not the slightest proletarian. I'm positive he had no political philosophy.
He supported Roosevelt just through a willingness to go along. After all, Smith endorsed Roosevelt in '32. Raskob didn't come along with enthusiasm. You had to wait until Smith gave the word before Raskob came up with some money for the campaign of '32. He wasn't one of the original contributors. He came later. I don't know how much he gave, but Jim Farley kept Raskob in line, more or less, and shamed him into it, perhaps. I don't think he lasted long with us. I think he was gone with the Liberty Leaguers as soon as they got going.
