association. They wanted to help him. Norman Davis was an awfully good-hearted and friendly man. William Church Osborn certainly went frequently to see him, as did Judge Philbin. There were plenty of others, I'm sure, who went to see him.

State people went to see him too, but there were probably more people at the federal level who went. He knew more people at the federal level who were important. He hadn't, alter all, been very long in New York when he was called to Washington. So he hadn't had the opportunity to build up a large acquaintanceship. There was also a funny, back country, Hudson River county judge whom he always had swear him in. He always came in. It was that kind of people, among others, who went to see him.

His interest in public affairs was kept alive.

Jim Farley, of course, was in all the time. Al Smith appointed him Boxing Commissioner. He was Al Smith's friend. He had been appointed from Rockland County by Al Smith to be Boxing Commissioner and he was a very great success at it. He was clean, honest and straightforward. The respectable people, or “better elements,” as I call them, thought well of Jim Farley. He was also equally acceptable to all the politicians - Tammany Hall, the O'Connells and all the other. He was not of their machine because he was a Rockland County man. He was not a Manhattan man.
