If I remember rightly, his great labor speech was delivered from Helena, Montana. I may be completely wrong about this, but it just flopped in my mind. I remember sitting in Mrs. Moskowitz's drawing room - she lived in the upper West nineties, a very pleasant little house - listening to her radio. Radios weren't in every home and I had gone there particularly because this was a very important speech. I wanted to hear it. I think it was Helena, Montana. I had been out in the country and speaking a great deal. I remember that as I heard this and realized that some of the sentences and some of the paragraphs were sentences that I'd contributed and that they represented our views and my views on labor matters, I realized that our views on labor and social matters were not commonly held in the USA. I had only realized that in the previous few weeks of campaigning. I hadn't realized that out in the country it seemed a queer thing for government to be doing the things that Al Smith had been doing in the regulation of hours of labor for women, hours of labor of children, providing sanitary facilities, seats in factories, regulation of child labor. It was something that they were not too interested in and
