the family, selling papers and working in the Fulton Fish Market. She'd been raised like a lady, according to Irish-American standards.

We'd been tioped off that the problem was to sell her. Irene went on with how we had gone to see him, and how well she knew Katie. What a pretty woman Mrs. Smith was! What charming manners she had! She told about the time we went and she opened the door herself and asked us to come right in. She told what Smith said to her, what she said to him. She discussed that and other episodes when they came to dinner at her house. She said, “I asked them to dinner at my house and they honored me by coming. I never had a more delightful lady in my home.” She told about the things they did together, and “You should see how they bring up their children.” She ended up her speech with, “Anyhow, I tell you he loves her!” That always brought the house down. She gave a picture of domestic bliss, perfect adjustment, entire devotion one to the other, to their children and their family. She gave the picture of the good man in his home. “Anyhow, he loves her,” always brought the house down.

This was the first time we'd tried it and it was a great success. They received it with great cheers.
