It's an accent, a shading. You hold certain vowels. It's a shade of an accent. She had that kind of an accent. She didn't speak as a lady of elegance and precision and training would have.

Her interests were very commonplace. One didn't ever talk with Mrs. Smith about anything important. She was interested in her children. She was interested in her husband. She was like ordinarily nice people. Her interests were the common ones. Her attidues were common ones. That was what “they” said about her, only they exaggerated it and said she was vulgar and coarse, which she never was. One thing Katie never was was vulgar or coarse. She was polite and thoughtful with a refined touch. She was just nice and commonplace. She very easily fell into overdressing because she was not critical.
