Langhorne, the oldest of the Langhorne girls who was Irene's older sister, married a man named Moncure Perkins. He was a Virginian, but his name was Perkins. My name was Perkins too. Although I came strictly out of New England, the name was a familiar one. I'm sure that in introducing me they said, “She bears a name well known in our community, where Mr. Chissy Langhorne's oldest daughter married Moncure Perkins.”

There were quite a few men there, and about half of the people there, including the gentlemen, got the idea that I was Lizzie Langhorne married to a Perkins. When the luncheon was over, I was so greeted by a number of perfect strangers who kissed me warmly and said, “Ah knew yoah father real well. Ah knew him very well.” I would try to get in a word to say that Mr. Moncure Perkins was no relation of mine, but they just kept on saying, “Ah knew him well.” They never got the idea out of their heads that I was Lizzie. “Yoah name's Lizzie. I suppose you were christened Elizabeth, but we always called you Lizzie.” I would say, “I was christened Frances,” but they would go right on and never listen at all. They were so fond of me. Lizzie Langhorne was Irene's oldest sister. She had been dead for twenty-odd years and was a great deal older
