receiving children, or receiving tubercular patients. We told those stories.
I thought it was safer to wade right into the religion. I remember being warned not to, and then deciding that I'd better, in talking to some man down there who struck me as having a good, clear mind and being himself clear of bigotry. I said, didn't he think this was better? He said, “Yes, if you don't mind some body heaving an egg or tomato at you. We've got some crazy people here. If you're not afraid of that, go ahead. They won't do anything worse.”
I said, “They won't do that. The Southern gentleman code will protect us.”
He said, “You're probably right. You're ladies after all and there are things that they wouldn't do to a lady that they would do to a man.”
I remember that in Atlanta we were aware of people in the back of the hall who talked. They began to murmer, then they began to mutter, then they began to go “Yah, yah, yah, yah.” It was the kind of thing that was done by somebody in the audience who wants to break up the meeting or who wants to make the speaker quit. It's very effective. It's one of the most unpleasant things I ever met. But of course there was always a solid body of local Democratic politicians who had asked us to come. There was a solid
