got the idea of the differences between the people of the South. For instance, in Atlanta nobody thought I was Lizzie Langhorne who married Moncure Perkins. They didn't know Lizzie Langhorne married Moncure Perkins. It didn't mean anything, so nobody took me for Lizzie Langhorne there. I ceased to be Irene's older sister. They were a much more sophisticated group in many ways. They were also a rougher group and rougher also in their attitudes toward Negroes, which was not an issue in this campaign at all. One did observe it, however. In Danville, Virginia the man who held up his fingers on the street corner to have a Negro boy get him some corn likker was nice to the Negroes. The boy was a friend of his. Everything was very pleasant.
I realized that the Negroes in Atlanta and Alabama were of a rougher sort. The ones you saw were rougher. The people who were servants in the hotels and the houses were not as attractive as the ones you had seen in Virginia and North Carolina even. You saw that it was a different element.
Also you began to get into the area where a lot of people had left and gone to Texas and into the West after the Civil War, or just as it broke out. I knew, from my study of the economic history of the United States, that it was in those areas that the plantation system was breaking
