of Republicans. You were trying to reconcile Democrats to a support of the candidate which their party had nominated.

The part of the campaign that I was sent to do in the South was purely defensive. By and large through the country a very fine, very strong and very educative offensive was being waged. I know that because I went to other parts of the country later. I went to Massachusetts. I went to Pennsylvania. I went to other places where you could do an educative job. You didn't have to relieve them of their prejudices against religion, the slums and so forth. You just had to talk with them about a constructive program-- This is what this man did as Governor. This is a sample. We like it. We think you'll like it. If he's elected, this is the type of thing, though not the identical thing, that he will weave into the pattern of the federal government.

I think it was at that point in the educational work which the Smith campaign enabled all of us - not me alone, because most people were working in other states rather than in the South - to do, that the basis lay for the constructive social attitude which was to become the climate of the Democratic party. I think we began laying it then, as we began describing in other states what Smith had done in New York. We were saying, “This is the kind of attitude he holds towards human beings and human society and which he
