campaign earlier was a defense of the Wilson administration, a defense of the League of Nations, a defense of the Federal Reserve and all the other reforms that had been put in. I don't believe that the program of social justice got much attention, but I wouldn't want to say that for a fact because I assume that a reading of the speeches, which must be on record, would indicate the degree to which such concepts were discussed.

However, in the '28 Smith campaign those concepts were discussed. I remember talking to Mrs. Moskowitz about it. Some of the material that we put out from headquarters was aimed at giving speakers, state committees and ordinary precinct workers information along those lines. When Al Smith was Governor, you read the Governor's messages to the Legislature - he made one every January 1st - and you'll see that they were very carefully drawn up. I contributed to some of them, naturally, and some parts of them. You can read those and see what the program was. The things he reported on to the Legislature show that he was very largely concerned with the social life of the people of the State of New York.
