of “our” boys could go so far. They felt that the doors were no longer closed. It was partly that, and partly that queer association you have with people you pray for. They had prayed for him, and here he was. You love people you pray for. You love them and you know them. You get to understand them and know why they do what they do. You get very intimate with people you pray for, whether you see them in the meantime or not. You pray for this man and here he was in the flesh. They were full of affection.

That reception and others of the same kind in communities where he was totally unknown, where you knew he had never been before, where he had nothing to stand on but his record in the State of New York and the great Democratic party to which he always gave the firmest allegiance, were the things that misled him into a belief that he was going to be elected. He came back from one of these big swings with a deep conviction that he was going to be elected. He was sure of it and he was sure of it from what he had observed. I remember his saying in headquarters, in the brief period he was there, “I know politics and I know political crowds. I know political loyalties. I have never seen anything like this.
