York to win over those two hundred women. Nobody would think it worthwhile doing it today.

I'm not sure that those who planned that were not wise, because those women had great influence, both with their husbands, in society generally, and in the state of mind and attitudes of the Democrats and independent voters who were around, and who were not too hot about Hoover. Hoover wasn't known as a Republican. The same thing was the matter with Hoover that's the matter with Eisenhower. He wasn't a Republican from the point of view of the regulars. So they had great hopes of winning over a good many Republicans to Al Smith.

The luncheon was beautiful and exquisite. It was a lovely place. Aileen and I have always remembered it, because they made such a point of the menu, which we never would have thought of. We came to make our speeches. They had gone to great extremes to get out of season delicacies. I remember that we had shad roe which doesn't come, if I remember rightly, in September or October. We had shad roe and hearts of artichokes, among other things. It was the most exquisite cooking. I don't remember the menu, but I remember that those in charge of the luncheon had gone through great pain to have a very impressive, exotic menu. It was beautifully served and everybody was beautifully dressed,
