to hush up the “bad” people. They would say, “Hush, behave yourselves. Shame on you!” That would come from our adherents at the same time that others would be shouting epithets and throwing tomatoes. There was scuffling going on in the back all the time. Harry Hawes would shout out to the police officer to, “Put them out! Put them out!”

It was not a pleasant job. You just went on with your speech. You said it all and then you sat down. Then, of course, the loyal Democrats applauded like mad. The others booed, hooted and so forth.

Then Aileen made her little speech, but she didn't have the kind of a voice I had. She was almost drowned out. Very wisely she shortened her speech. The eggs and the tomatoes continued to roll.

By this time Harry thought it was time to close the meeting. So he closed the meeting with the Mormon elder praying again. Then all bedlam broke out. It was terrible! The police moved in. There was a terrible scuffle. They had their eggs and their tomatoes and they wanted to throw them. It was really something.

Anyhow we got out of there and it was an experience, as Aileen said, that we never would have had otherwise. Neither Aileen nor I got what I would call a direct hit with
