slaps on the back with odds and ends of people around the lobbies and so forth. When he rose to speak, he towered quite a bit over the average person. He could make himself heard and had a big voice. You remember that. You remembered how active he was. He was always rising. He was always having something to say.

There was some kind of a vote to be taken - what I don't remember exactly - and he couldn't get recognition. He rose to be recognized. He wanted to speak either in favor or against it. I'm not sure it wasn't a nomination of some sort or a committee report that was being steered through. At any rate, he couldn't get recognition, and it appeared to us watching in the galleries that the lack of recognition was deliberate, that they didn't intend to recognize him. He was sitting quite far back in the New York delegation. The New York delegation occupied front rows and he was sitting in the middle of it. Most of the seats were empty. The gavel was just about to come down to stop any further debate or speeches. He saw that this would happen and he hadn't got recognition. So he put his hand on the back of the chair in front of him and he vaulted - a regular gymnasium vault - over at least four or five rows of chairs - the convention movable chairs.
