done the work.

It was really hysterical there. He didn't concede for another hour or two hours, but it was obvious that it was going against us when he came in. I'll never forget how very strange he looked - so unlike himself. He had that kind of glassy eye that I never saw on him before. It was the glassy eye of a man who's steeling himself to go through with something. Usually no matter what it was he had to go through with he looked human and at ease. He was always at ease. He once said to me something which I've often thought of in emergencies, “Nothing embarrasses me.” Somebody had told him he'd be embarrassed by something or other and he said, “Nothing embarrasses me.” That was pretty nearly true. Nothing embarrassed him. Nothing could embarrass him because he was master of himself and he had never sullied the integrity of his own personality. It was always there and he was always in control of himself and willing to face anything.

However, that night he had a look on that was quite different. I don't think he was the master of the situation, but he had steeled himself to go through. He had that glassy look in his eye. He was excited, of course, and had that flush that comes with excitement. He had his face set in a kind of a permanent smile. It wasn't natural. It wasn't like him. He had a very mobile face which never was set.
