she telephoned to Hyde Park and talked to him. They knew it up there. She knew it and we knew it, but very few others knew it. I took her home to her house, said good night to her and went home myself. It did seem incredible to be going uptown knowing that Roosevelt was elected when everybody else knew he was defeated. I remember waking up somebody in my family and telling them the Governor was elected and their saying that that was not possible. Their morning papers had come in about seven o'clock saying that Roosevelt was defeated. My family said, “See, you were wrong.” It wasn't until the early editions of the evening papers that it was understood, except that it spread like wildfire by word of mouth during the morning that he was elected. When I went down to the office, there was the greatest excitement because they too had heard that he was elected after all.
Of course, there was great sadness over Al. It wasn't until about a week after that that I went to see Al back in Albany. He'd settled down by that time. He saw what the situation was. The emotional strain of that night was over. I went in to see him about something, because after all he was Governor, and as Chairman of the Industrial Board I had business with him. He said, “Sit down, and let's see what happened, Commissioner.”
