first nomination at Madison Square Garden had permeated all through the Democratic party generally, and that they hadn't stood by him. He felt that it was not the time yet when a man from the city slums could be put into high office by the Democrats. The Democrats liked to take the votes, and angled for the votes, of the people of the great cities, but they hadn't actually accepted the lower classes of the great cities as citizens along with the rest of them, qualified to be President and everything else. He analyzed that a good deal.

I think to a very large extent there was truth in it. I remember thinking about it. The Democratic party is an older party than the Republican party. The name of the party is old. It had the connotation of an old, aristocratic element and attitude. It was less commercial than the Republicans who were a kind of commercial party. I had a grandfather on my mother's side who always called himself a Jeffersonian Democrat. Jeffersonian Democrats, he always let it be perfectly clear, were not the South Boston Democrats. It was a kind of a theoretical, philosophical position.

I don't think that that was completely it, because certainly as we saw the run of the mill Democratic leaders out through the country there were no ancient Jeffersonian
