In all the years they were in Albany there was never one story told about Mrs. Smith of anything funny, stupid or ridiculous that she had said. There were plenty of stories told about other Governor's wives previously. It's a very gossipy city. Other Governor's wives had said something comic, preposterous or ridiculous some time that got repeated around. There was never anything said about Mrs. Smith because she didn't say much.

Quite a good many changes were made in the Executive Mansion during the period that the Smiths lived there. That was always a matter of bitterness to the Republicans. The Whitmans had lived there just before and then the Millers for one term. I don't recall what the Nathan Millers had done to the Executive Mansion. I'm not sure that I was ever there during their inhabitance there. The Charles Whitmans had done a little to it and it looked very nice. They had taken a room that's right near the front door at the left and made a sort of library of it. It looked very well. They'd put some dark red leather furniture in there and it was a good place for the Governor to see people without admitting them to the very intimate part of the family house.
