In this campaign I went to several upstate towns where I had influence and standing. I remember going to Utica and making a big speech in Utica. I went to Syracuse and some towns further up. Actually there was very little use in going into the northern tier which was solid and very reactionary Republican. I had been up there in some of the Smith campaigns to relieve their minds about his being a bigoted Roman Catholic and his putting the church in control of everything. However, it wasn't necessary to do that in the Roosevelt campaigns because they knew he wasn't. That upstate part is very bigoted Protestant. Their backs rise up when they hear the word “Catholic.” They can't swallow it at all. But it wasn't necessary to go up there in that campaign.
I went into the southern tier where you were getting growing industrialism. That was in Elmira, Binghamton and those places. As the Commissioner of Labor I had a good standing because I could discuss what the labor legislation was and how beneficial it had been.
The town where Tom Watson operates the International Business Machines is a suburb of Binghamton. Also the town of Endicott, where Endicott-Johnson operates, is another close-by area. I may say that the prevailing rate of wages
