I spoke independently in that campaign and I traveled with the Governor in some of his automobile jaunts through state fairs and big outdoor meetings. I don't remember much of that except the Syracuse fair. You always remember the Syracuse fair. You can't help but remember it because it's the best fair in New York. It's the biggest fair. It's interesting. You ride around the race track. Everybody's there. You go and look at the prize hogs. You examine the bed quilts and all that sort of thing. The Governor would stay in his car. I remember once going in and taking a bed quilt off the table and asking if I may take it to show the Governor because it was such an extraordinarily fine pattern. I knew something about bed quilts and I knew the name of this pattern. It was the “Old Maid's Ramble.” It was a pattern that was used in New England a great deal. It's a very pretty pattern of patchwork and a design. This was a very pretty one done in very pretty colors of cotton prints. The Governor could always make an appropriate remark of admiration for handiwork or for fine hogs or for whatever it was that was being shown.

We also went to a number of places where we could get a factory audience at noon, such a Auburn. Of course, at Auburn we had the Osbornes always. They were good Democrats, leading citizens and everything else. They were always a help.
