It was several weeks after that that Governor Smith said to me, “You know, he made an awful mistake not to take Mrs. Moskowitz. I'm finding it harder and harder to help him. I can't tell Guernsey Cross things. Guernsey Cross don't know anything. I can't even tell him because he doesn't understand anything.”
I, of course, at that moment began to realize that Al was getting into a psychological quagmire. He was not acting up to the great Al Smith, who, having done a great job and finished it, would now step out and look at something else. His mind was turning back on to his job, his precious, beloved job - Governor of the State of New York.
When I heard Adlai Stevenson speaking the other night (October 1952) and speaking of being Governor of Illinois, what a wonderful experience it was and how he loved Illinois, I said to myself, “That's just the way Al Smith loved the State of New York.” I understand how people who have undertaken the government of a particular state, where you can know the details and the intimate life of the people, can love the state and the people like they never love anybody else. The USA is so big that you love the people of the state because you know them, you see them, you see their problems intimately in close-up. Anything you can do to
