Cousin Charles had been with us two months on this occasion and he was likely to stay until Easter so far as anybody could see. She got very angry about it all. I remember this took place in the dining room one morning. Cousin Charles was having his breakfast and she just flew into a thousand fits and threw things around, threw utensils and chairs. Mother said, “Darling, you musn't do this. This is terrible. We have company in the house. We have company in the house.”
She looked up, with one more bang of the table cutlery, or whatever it was, and said, “I don't care. He's been here two months now. He isn't company anymore. He'll have to take it with the rest of the family.”
Here was a very vigorous personality. It had its limits and couldn't be held down for a long time on the pretense of putting up a good picture to the outside world. I think that that breeds, as I'm sure it did in Roosevelt, a kind of reserve of things that are not shown to the world and situations that are not shown to the world. They are not shared with anyone. You use your judgment as to what you share with your playmates. You don't share everything with them.
